The Dolympic Games - Part 2
The week seemed to pass quicker than usual, and finally the day came. I was actually leaving for the Dolympics. Part of me felt sad, having to say goodbye to my family and all, but the other side felt fluttery and excited, ready to start the day. It was very early in the airport, around 5:00 in the morning. I tried to persuade my sisters to stay home so they wouldn’t have to get up so early, but they wanted to come anyway.
“Flight D276 for Rio, Brazil will depart in approximately 10 minutes.” A soft voice rang out from the speakers.
“Well, that’s me. I guess I better get going. Goodbye, everyone.”
I went around and gave each girl a hug, saying I’d call them when I could. While everyone was cheerful, they also seemed a bit sad to see me go. I knew they would miss me, and I would miss them too. But I also knew that they were happy for me, happy to see me succeed and achieve something I had been working for all my life.
I grabbed my bags and walked towards the boarding gate. “Bye, McKenna! You can do it!” My sisters all called. I smiled and gave a playful bow, which only made them laugh and cheer louder. Then I waved goodbye once more, and disappeared into the crowd.
Butterflies flew around in my stomach as I stepped on the plane and found an empty seat. I haven’t flown very much before, so I was the teeniest bit nervous waiting for the plane to take off. I dropped my luggage on the floor by my feet, and let out an anxious sigh. This was going to be a long flight. I would arrive in Rio tomorrow morning, but that was a long time between now and then.
“May I please have your attention.” A young stewardess said sweetly through the intercom. “Our flight is about to begin. Please take your seats and do not get up until we are fully in the air. Then you may move around the cabin if needed. Thank you for joining us today on American Girl Airlines, and enjoy the ride!”
This is it. We’re taking off! I shuddered nervously as the plane lurched forward and then slowly ascended into the sky. Closing my eyes, I prayed a silent prayer for safety and a quick flight. When I opened them again, I gasped in awe. Everything below looked so small from up here! I felt like a giant. I grinned as I settled back down in my seat. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
Around lunchtime, the same stewardess who had spoken earlier came by and took each passengers order. “Hello! I’m Chloe.” she said brightly when it was my turn. “What can I get for you today?”
She handed me a menu, and I glanced at all the choices. For just an airline, they sure did have a big selection! Should I chose a salad, or the ham sandwich?, I wondered.
“Oh!”, Chloe said softly.
“Hmm?” I looked up at her.
Chloe blushed and said, “Oh, I just saw the pin on your jacket. It looked like the ones the Dolympic athletes wear, but maybe not.”
“You mean this?” I took off the pin and held it for her to see.
Chloe’s eyes widened in surprise. “Ye- yes!” she stuttered. Then she lowered her voice. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but are you competing in The Dolympic Games?”.
I gave a little chuckle. “I sure am! How did you know?”
The stewardess clasped her hands together and a dreamy look came in her eyes. “My mother was in the Dolympics a long time ago. She had a pin just like yours.”
“How neat! I’m McKenna Brooks, a gymnast on the USA team.” I extended my hand out to Chloe.
“It’s an honor to meet you Ms. Brooks. I will be sure to look for you when I watch the Dolympics.” Chloe smiled. “Now, how about one of our ham sandwiches? They’re quite delicious.”
“You read my mind.” I said with a wink.
Chloe hurried off and brought back a tray with a fresh sandwich and a water bottle. Then she went on to attend the other passengers as I indulged into my meal. For airplane food, it wasn’t that bad; pretty good actually. I slowly finished the rest and took a drink of water, being careful to save some for later. What next? I thought. I grabbed my backpack and dug around, looking for some kind of entertainment or thing to do. Hmm... Reading? No… Drawing? No… Headphones? No… That’s when I found it. In the very bottom of my bag, was a long cozy blanket. I knew for a fact that I definitely did not pack this, but I smiled as I thought of who did. Grace was so organized and always thought about the littlest but important things for trips. She must have done this for me.
“Ahhh." I murmured happily, rubbing the soft blanket on my face. “Might as well take a nap. It’ll take up some time, and plus, I’ll be rested for the Dolympics tomorrow.” I snuggled down in my chair and drifted off to sleep.
When I awoke, I was confused and unaware of where I was- certainly not at home in my warm and cozy bed. Then I remembered I was traveling to the Dolympics. I sunk back into my seat and settled down again.
The sky was dark, but the sun was peeking over the horizon. Most of the passengers were wide awake, and some were still snoozing. I pulled out my phone to check the time. To my surprise, it was 7:02 a.m. in the morning- I was almost to Rio!
I unlocked my phone and checked my texts. “Ooh!” I exclaimed softly, trying not to awake the few sleeping passengers. There was a message from my sisters back in the United States.
Hey, McKenna! We all hope you’re doing ok, and are you near Rio yet? We miss you and can’t wait to watch you on TV today!
I knew right away that Sierra had charge of the phone. She was a "Straight A” student and never liked to use improper grammar, even when she texted.
hi sierra! im fine, and i miss you guys too. I replied. im getting pretty close, but i dont know when ill arrive. sometime soon.
Ding! Right away, Sierra answered back. Besides being great at schoolwork, she was also an early bird.
Great! Was your flight good?
yes, it was kinda scary at first but im good now.
“Flight D276 for Rio, Brazil will be landing shortly. Please gather your belongings and wait until the plane is on the ground before exiting. Thank you.” Chloe informed the anxious passengers over the intercom.
I hurried to type up my last message.
i gotta go. landing in brazil now!! look for me on tv today! :) bye!!
Stuffing my phone in my bag, I carefully packed up all my other things as the plane’s wheels rolled onto the ground.
I was in Rio.
Stay tuned for the next part of The Dolympic Games! Coming soon!
